Trinidad and Tobago is mourning the loss of one of calypso\u2019s greatest icons. Slinger Francisco, known worldwide as the Mighty Sparrow, died peacefully in New York on 27 September 2026 at age 91 after a brief illness. In a family statement, he was remembered as \u201cTrinidad and Tobago\u2019s Calypso icon\u201d and a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born on 9 July 1935 in the fishing village of Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco moved to Trinidad as an infant and grew up in Port of Spain, singing in his church choir before turning to calypso in his early twenties. Performing first as \u201cLittle Sparrow,\u201d he broke through in 1956 when \u201cJean and Dinah\u201d won him the Calypso King title, launching a career spanning more than seven decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sparrow went on to win Trinidad\u2019s Carnival Road March competition eight times and the national Calypso Monarch title eight times, along with the rare Calypso King of Kings distinction, twice, in 1985 and 1988. His catalogue, running to hundreds of songs, moved fluidly between biting social and political commentary and pure Carnival fete, from \u201cCongo Man\u201d (famously banned by the BBC for 23 years) to international crossover hits like 1969\u2019s \u201cOnly a Fool Breaks His Own Heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond his performing career, Sparrow mentored generations of calypsonians and soca artists, and his influence carried well past Trinidad and Tobago\u2019s shores into the wider Caribbean diaspora. He was honoured with the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Chaconia Medal, and an OBE, among other national and international recognitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As tributes continue to pour in across the region, Sparrow\u2019s passing closes a defining chapter in Trinidad and Tobago\u2019s Carnival and cultural history, one built on wit, artistry, and an unmatched command of the calypso stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
