Emancipation Parade, Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago

The Emancipation Parade takes place on 1 August in Scarborough, marking the abolition of slavery in the British Caribbean in 1834. Emancipation Day is a national public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago, observed with processions, African drumming, dress and cultural programmes that honour heritage and freedom. In Tobago the day carries particular resonance and coincides with the climax of the Heritage Festival. The parade is open to all, and visitors are welcome to witness one of the most meaningful days on the calendar.
