World Steelpan Day, Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago

World Steelpan Day is observed on 11 August, celebrating the steelpan, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. The United Nations proclaimed the day in 2023, recognising the instrument, invented in Trinidad and Tobago in the twentieth century, for its role in culture and the creative economy. In Scarborough the day is marked with pan performances and community events. It is a fitting celebration of an instrument born in these islands and now played around the world.
