Guide to Lighthouses

Lighthouses such as the one at Galera Point near Toco, on Trinidad's north-east tip, and the lighthouse on Chacachacare island off the north-west coast mark points where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Paria. They are still part of the islands' maritime history, and the headlands around them give wide sea views.

Access varies. Some sites are open grounds where you can walk around the outside, while island lighthouses need a boat trip and a walk. Most have no facilities.

Questions visitors ask

Can I go inside a lighthouse?

Usually not. Most are working or protected structures, so visitors stay outside.

How do I get to an island lighthouse?

Arrange a boat from a marina or charter operator, and agree the drop-off and pick-up times before you leave.

What should I bring?

Water, sun protection and good shoes. Paths can be rough and steep.
