Tunapuna Experimental Traffic Scheme 2026: One-Way Streets, Parking Rules and Fines

Drivers heading into Tunapuna should expect a different layout for the next two months. The Traffic Control (Experimental Scheme) (Tunapuna) Regulations, 2026 (Legal Notice No. 827) took effect at 12.00 a.m. on 12 October 2026 and expire at midnight on 12 December 2026.

The Regulations were made by Commissioner of Police A. Guevarro on 8 October 2026, with the consent of the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, E. Zakour, on 9 October 2026, under section 67(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chap. 48:50. Here is what has changed.

One-way streets

  • Cochrane Street: southbound only, between Sheriff Street and the Eastern Main Road.
  • Freeling Street: northbound only, between Sheriff Street and the Eastern Main Road.
  • Payne Lane: eastbound only, between Tunapuna Road and Cochrane Street.
  • Tunapuna Road: northbound only, between the Eastern Main Road and Jackman Street.
  • Tunapuna Road: southbound only, between St. John Road and Jackman Street.

In practice, Jackman Street becomes the meeting point on Tunapuna Road, with traffic flowing towards it from both directions.

No left turn from Goya Street

Drivers travelling south along Goya Street may not turn left onto the Eastern Main Road.

No stopping or waiting on Green Street

Vehicles may not stop or wait on Green Street, between Fairley Street and El Dorado Road, from 1.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m., Monday to Friday, except on public holidays. Parking is also prohibited on that stretch during the same hours.

Alternate-day parking on Cochrane and Freeling Streets

On both streets, between Sheriff Street and the Eastern Main Road, parking alternates by side and day, except on public holidays:

Street and sideNo parking on
Cochrane Street, eastern sideMonday, Wednesday, Friday
Cochrane Street, western sideTuesday, Thursday, Saturday
Freeling Street, eastern sideMonday, Wednesday, Friday
Freeling Street, western sideTuesday, Thursday, Saturday

Fines and towing

Breaking these Regulations is a traffic violation. On summary conviction, the fine is $750 for a first violation and $1,000 for each subsequent violation. A vehicle parked in breach of the Regulations may also be removed and impounded under sections 108 and 109 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act.

Plan ahead

Because this is an experimental scheme, it runs only until 12 December 2026. Until then, allow extra time, follow the posted signs and check which side of the street you can park on before you leave the car.
