Guide to Nature Reserves

Tobago's Main Ridge Forest Reserve was declared a Crown Reserve in 1776 and is described as the oldest legally protected forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere. In Trinidad, wetlands, forest reserves and bird sanctuaries are home to hundreds of bird species, including the scarlet ibis.

Some reserves need permits. During the sea turtle nesting season, from March 1 to August 31, the main nesting beaches at Fishing Pond, Matura and Grande Riviere are prohibited areas, and you need a permit to enter. Permits are issued by the Forestry Division and some District Revenue offices.

Questions visitors ask

Do I need a guide?

For rainforest trails, wetlands and turtle watching, a local guide is strongly recommended. Guides know the wildlife, the trails and the rules.

What should I bring?

Water, insect repellent, closed shoes, a light rain jacket and a torch for evening visits. Leave no rubbish behind.

Can I see turtles?

Yes, during the nesting season, with a permit and ideally with a local guide. Keep lights off and keep your distance from nesting turtles.
