Guide to Beaches and River Spots

Trinidad's north coast beaches face the Caribbean Sea and can have strong waves and currents. Many of Tobago's bays on the Caribbean side are calmer, while its Atlantic coast is rougher. River spots, such as pools and waterfalls in the Northern Range, are popular for a cool dip and a family river lime.

Facilities vary a lot. Busy beaches may have car parks, changing rooms, showers and food stalls, while remote bays and rivers have nothing, so bring water and food and take your rubbish home. Weekends and public holidays are the busiest times.

Questions visitors ask

Are there lifeguards?

Some of the busiest beaches, including Maracas, Las Cuevas, Tyrico and Blanchisseuse, have lifeguards on duty at set times. Many beaches and all river spots have none, so swim with care and never swim alone.

Is it safe to swim in rivers?

Rivers can rise very quickly after heavy rain, even when it is not raining where you are. Stay out of rivers and away from waterfalls during and after heavy rain, especially in the rainy season from June to December.

When is the best time to go?

The dry season, from January to May, usually brings calmer weather. Go early in the day for parking and shade, and check the marine and weather alerts before you set out.

Do I have to pay?

Most beaches are free to visit. Some charge for parking, changing rooms or showers, so keep some cash with you.
