Guide to Forts

The forts of Trinidad and Tobago were built by European powers that fought over the islands for centuries. Fort George looks over Port of Spain and the Gulf of Paria, while Fort King George above Scarborough and smaller forts such as Fort Bennett and Fort James in Tobago overlook the sea.

Most forts are open spaces with paths, cannons and lookouts. Roads up to them can be steep and narrow, and shade can be limited, so bring water and sun protection.

Questions visitors ask

Are forts free to visit?

Many are free. Some have facilities, guides or a small museum on site, with their own opening hours.

When is the best time to visit?

Early morning and late afternoon are cooler and give the best light for photographs. Check closing times if you plan to stay for sunset.

Are they suitable for children?

Yes, but watch them near walls and steep drops, as barriers are not always in place.
