Just on the outskirts of the vibrant city of Port of Spain, this zoo is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and families alike. With over 200 species and 2300 animals, the zoo offers an unforgettable journey through the diverse fauna of the Caribbean and beyond.
The Emperor Valley Zoo, the only zoo in Trinidad and Tobago, opened its doors on November 8, 1952. The zoo was named after the large, blue Emperor or Morpho butterfly that once frequented the valley. Initially housing 127 animals in 10 cages, the zoo has since expanded to over 2300 animals across 200 species.
The zoo is home to both local and foreign animals, including lions, ocelots, parrots, macaws, snakes, caiman, wildfowl, giraffes, tigers, and many more. The zoo’s collection is divided into categories such as small mammals, large cats, a reptile house, aquariums, a deer park, primates, and ponds.
The zoo has undergone significant upgrades in recent years, thanks to the efforts of the Zoological Society of Trinidad and Tobago (ZSTT) and financial assistance from the government. These upgrades include the construction of a giraffe enclosure and a tiger exhibit, which now houses two white Bengals and a ginger Bengal. The white Bengals successfully bred and had two cubs in January 2015.
Visitors to the Emperor Valley Zoo have praised the improvements made over the years. The zoo is lauded for its general cleanliness, well-tended animals, and friendly staff. The zoo also offers feeding times for certain animals, providing an interactive experience for visitors.
The Emperor Valley Zoo is a testament to Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to wildlife conservation and education. Whether you’re a local resident or a tourist seeking a unique Caribbean experience, the Emperor Valley Zoo offers a captivating glimpse into the world of animals. So, pack your bags, bring your curiosity, and prepare for an adventure that will leave you asking for more!
